Importantly, these patterns do not appear among white British youth, nor among older individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds, living in the Leave-supporting areas. Our analysis uses data from Understanding Society, a household survey that follows the same individuals over time, and focuses on UK-born people aged in 2016. Participants include minority ethnic service users, mental health professionals, stakeholders, and relevant bodies such as mental health organisations and Information Technology experts utilising EHRs.

We’ve created some space for gay people, but we’re still behind on accepting trans, non-binary, and gender-fluid individuals. Women’s mental health often involves creating space to be who they are unapologetically, then figuring out how to navigate systems that still discriminate. We have this Western culture idea of individual responsibility, and we apply that same approach to minorities, saying “mental health is your problem – go seek help.” But we don’t look at the systems of oppression that create barriers. The biggest misconception is treating mental health as purely an individual problem. Because when it comes to mental health, every mind matters. The path to mental health equity is long and challenging, but it’s a journey worth taking.
For over 65 years, our Harlem-based organization has worked to provide culturally responsive, family-centered care to some of New York City’s most underserved neighborhoods. Our analysis indicates that the effects of local poverty on mental health are not mediated by environmental factors. Finally, none of the environmental variables mediated the effects of local poverty on mental health. Similarly, local greenspace Latino behavioral health challenges conference did not act as a protective factor against the adverse effects of local poverty on mental health in our study. The mediation analysis assessing whether effects of local poverty on mental health were mediated by environmental stressors, did not yield any significant associations between environmental variables and the outcome mental health, thus violating mediation analysis assumptions.
